IDF was appointed to evaluate compliance to fire regulations of a new Bologna Business School campus, as a derogation to the current Fire Code. The campus will constitute an extension of the University of Bologna located in Villa Guastavillani, by revamping existing buildings that arise on the crest of the hills overlooking the city. The campus will occupy 2 buildings: a newly constructed building with a total floor area of 2015 sqm and a listed building (existing farmhouse), with a total floor area of approximately 1035 sqm. The two buildings will accommodate various spaces such as common areas, classrooms, study area, refectory, offices, meeting rooms, workshops, kitchen, gym with changing rooms as well as plant rooms.

The project comprises of the fabrication of a new construction with multi-purpose intended use which, according to the needs, might be transformed to light sport activities hall (aerobics, yoga, slow gymnastics, etc.), theatre, cinema and meeting room. The building extends over a land area of about 8500 m2, of which 2960 m2 are dedicated to the centre, consisting of 2 cylinders of different diameter and height but sharing the same constructive system. A building with 34.65 x 19.60 m rectangular base, accommodates an indoor exhibition space and an external architectural-purpose steel structure. The building frame consists of hollow steel columns filled with concrete, supporting steel trusses over the short span. Secondary structure consists of reinforced concrete slabs, which distribute horizontal actions to the columns.
Fire resistance assessment, in accordance with the requirements of ENV 1992-1-2, was articulated in the following phases: • Determining the temperature distribution within structural elements, as a function of exposure time; • Determining the variation of mechanical properties of construction materials as a function of temperature; • Verification of the loadbearing capacity at Ultimate Limit State (ULS) with the semi probabilistic limit state design method.

The expansion of the LMU Holloway Campus has foreseen the realization of the innovative educational, technological and creative spaces within a very peculiar mixed structure, built at the end of the 19-th century. There have been destructive and non-destructive diagnostic investigations to support the assessment of the structural fire resistance. The analyses made it possible to determine the most suitable protection system and to certify the achievement of the relevant requirement.

The business for which the fire safety design has been carried out in the Bologna enterprises relates to a gym, Palestra Prime Albiroli (Prime Albiroli Gym), located in a mixed building with 4 floors above the ground and 1 basement. As for the Gallarate enterprises, the performed fire safety design regarded a gym located within a mixed-type building that houses, on the south-west side, another activity (business premises) and a garage in the floor below.
Carmen Longo Pool (Stadium - Bologna)
Compliance to fire regulations of "Carmen Longo" Olympic swimming pool, propriety of the Municipality of Bologna, was evaluated as a derogation to the current Fire Code. Olympic swimming pool and its auxiliary facilities are located in an existing listed building, built in 1929 and subject to restrictions imposed by "Soprintendenza" (Public authority for cultural heritage), with a gross floor area of 3520 sqm and a maximum clear height of approximately 15.40 m. In particular, the pool bottom is at level H = - 2.30 m, with several technical rooms and a tunnel connecting the pool itself with a nearby stadium, allowing the passage of athletes; the poolside is at level H = + 0.00 m, with offices, changing rooms and a small café bar, while the first floor (H variable starting from + 4.00 m) is where stands for the audience are located. Sports activities regulated by C.O.N.I. and by the national sports federations recognized by C.O.N.I. will take place in this complex.
"A. Gabelli" school (Belluno)
Fire safety design regarding the School Complex "Aristide Gabelli" with a Derogation Request for the observance of the architectural constraints and to combine them with fire protection requirements. The building, originally a school building in 1934, takes the form of a historical building and therefore is subject to protection by the Superintendence.
Primary School (Montebelluna - TV)
IDF has carried out the fire protection design for the new school complex of the primary schools of Biadene and Pederiva which are two hamlets in the municipality of Montebelluna – province of Treviso (Italy). The new school complex consists of the primary school with an adjacent gymnasium. The total surface area of the entire complex is about 2787 m2, of which 2160 m2 are assigned to scholastic activities and 627 m2 are dedicated to the gym services and facilities, all the project is constructed on ground floor level. The scholastic complex is composed of a central part with a distributive function, to which 6 structural clusters are integrated, and inside it, there are service spaces such as classrooms, refectory, kitchen, gym, administrative offices, open garden, school library, first-aid room and toilets.

Park House comprises of an existing 7 storey building (lower ground, ground and six above ground levels). Currently, the building is semi-vacant with occupied floors in office use. The development consists of temporary change of use of ground, first and second floor to library use and the rest will provide new office space for the Campus. The analyses have shown that concrete flat slabs and columns have insufficient inherent fire resistance and therefore additional fire protection is required. IDF has carried out structural fire design for these elements, as well as for two external steel staircases which are parts of the escape system in case of emergency.

The MO-15 building, Department of Biomedical Sciences has been made in the 60s with a particular floor plan articulated with an F shape, characterized by 7 floors.4 tower blocks were made later while in recent times a new building has been added on the south side characterized by the same number of floors, now hosting the Department of Animal Biology. The fire protection design for the university complex incorporates the variations occurred during operation in the course of 10 years consisting of changes of the intended use, substances used and facilities / equipment available.

The realization and opening of the New Polo Informatico (Computer Science Complex) and Services Centre for Students at the University of Milan, has involved, as required by the Legislative Decree81/2008 (Consolidated Act) and Ministerial Decree of 10 March 1998 "General criteria for fire safety and emergency management in the workplace", the realization of the Plan of Emergency and Evacuation. The New Computer Science Complex and Services Centre for Students (completed in 2018), is constituted by a main "Tower building", which consists of 9 floors above the ground and hosts departments, educational halls, the student secretariat, a library, which is extended in two floors above the ground and a basement used mainly to keep paper archives and as a garage. The Plan of Emergency and Evacuation has been prepared through the analysis of fire design and study of the structural, typological and use characteristics of the whole complex. These preliminary activities have led to the outline and identification of the best strategies for mitigation of risks and the most effective communication and response procedures to various types of risk.
