PROJECT
The King’s Building is a Grade I listed building that forms part of the Strand Campus of King’s College London in the United Kingdom. The transformation of the old BBC headquarters (1930) into a university campus with offices, teaching spaces, medical clinics and student hubs.
CHALLEGES
The transformation made it essential to certify the fire resistance of the load-bearing structures.
SOLUTIONS
Since this is an unusual and peculiar construction system, made in terracotta tubes spanning between steel joists, IDF in agreement with local regulators, has undertaken an experimental laboratory test to evaluate the fire resistance of the floor protected with a special intumescent paint.
